It never ceases to amaze me how the rumour mill works prior to a Big Brother season. The unfortunate thing is that the rumours, after eleven seasons seem to be moving in cycles and they repeat themselves.
With 49 days and counting until the premiere of Big Brother 11 on CBS, we're already dealing with the possibilities of another All-Star season, a Celebrity season, an "Alumni vs Newbie" season. Already, I've read that there is at least one Canadian in the house this year. And, of course, with the news that Julie Chen is pregnant, the rumours have once again arisen that she will not be hosting the season. This one was quickly silenced by CBS and Julie herself. Julie Chen is as much a part of CBS's Big Brother as lame twists and backstabbing.
The rumours are, in fact, as repetitive as the twists. With ever fan willing to supply ideas for new twists and rules for the houseguests, each season begins with the hopes that there will be something new about Big Brother. Each of us contemplates at the end of the season how utterly lame the twists end up being. So, with the hopes that some of our ideas might indeed be noticed and written into the script, here are a few of the best. Feel free to add yours to the comments!
- Like in the British BB, have the houseguests responsible for carrying out tasks over a week long period. Not only is the Head of House responsible for nominations and challenge hosting, but they are also responsible to ensure that each houseguest performs a part of the week-long task. Tasks can be everything from building something to playing a role for a week.
- Actually deduct money from rule-breakers. If singing is not allowed in the Big Brother house, deduct the earnings from the culprits to teach them to knock it off. This means that rather than having to watch endless hours of the fish or front door, we'd actually have live feeds to watch. Big Brother sets rules. Enforce them!
- One twist idea that has been repeatedly suggested is that of mixing reality shows. Bring in a small alumni from Survivor to play houseguests for a season. Make the challenges a mixture of Survivor style and Big Brother style. Frankly, if I have to watch the same challenges another time, I'll scream. Also borrowed from Survivor is the idea of dividing the house into two teams to begin the game.
- Another old favourite idea is to keep the Jury members in the house. They cannot participate in the challenges or votes, but they can influence the house and oh the drama that would create!
- Have the houseguests earn additional rewards that they must earn. On a token basis, assign values to performing interesting and, hopefully, entertaining mini-challenges that they would do on their own time. Allow them to "shop" for the rewards which would be things like a movie night, a catered dinner, or a new outfit. This gives them the incentive to do more than sleep all day.
- Lastly, really get back to basics and allow the fans to vote out one of the nominees each week. Or simply give the fans a single vote in the eviction. This would not only change the strategies and alliances in the house, but would truly make the show more interactive. This is something fans of the show have been screaming for since Big Brother 2. We want a say in the game itself. BB10, promising to be the most interactive ever, once again limited us to stupid pranks. Big Brother 9 and the "America's Player" did much the same. We chose from three lame ideas for pranks that Eric had to perform. That did not give us a role in the game at all.
Do you have other ideas? Let's see them!
You can expect that RSVP-TV will report the theme and the cast release when the real things come out. As for the rumours, laugh at them. Not one of them in the past has come to fruition.
